It’s been fascinating reading all the various blog posts regarding the 30 or so best books to equal an MBA. Now no one really thinks they are the equivalent...but it some cases it might even be better. Heresy you say? Consider this, reading books on a variety of subjects will likely make you a more rounded individual...with more up to date concepts...than getting an MBA that focuses in on theoretical knowledge that your employer will likely not appreciate hearing from you. And if you doubt me, run to your nearest corporate HR depart (other than in the finance industry or certain high-falutin consulting firms) and ask them how they fell about MBA candidates. When they are done rolling their eyes, and if they are honest, they will tell you that MBAs are not looked favorably upon other than from other MBAs (and often not even by them, because after all, they know the truth).
Josh Kaufman has a great list of books. The Brandplay blog chimed in with ten books on branding; and the Greywolf blog lists the top ten web books.
Of course there are a few benefits to a Harvard (or other) MBA. As some of the comments on Jim Logan's blog pointed out, a Harvard MBA spiffs up your resume. And you can meet some cool folks. But guess what...you can meet cool folks in a variety of different ways that don't cost 100K.
As a bibliobsessive (it goes beyond bibliophilia with me) I'll be back to post my own top books (or just view the books on the sidebar for now). But for now, you can click on the above links and start filling your amazon shopping cart.
